LEGO F1 Stop Motion Animation: Recreating the Shanghai Circuit Frame by Frame
Bringing high-speed motorsport action into a tabletop stop-motion environment requires precise planning, clever rigging, and meticulous frame-by-frame execution. In this case study, we break down how our London studio brought the LEGO Formula 1 set to life on the Shanghai Circuit.
From custom rig removals in post-production to matching real-world race aerodynamics using physical brick manipulation, every second of footage was designed to stop the scroll.
The Concept & Storyboard
The goal was simple: recreate the intensity of an F1 race start using only LEGO bricks and tactile studio lighting. We mapped out every acceleration curve, corner drift, and pit stop maneuver before capturing a single frame.
Key Production Challenges
- Car stability: Keeping lightweight plastic cars balanced mid-drift without visible supports.
- Lighting consistency: Mimicking dramatic stadium floodlights across multi-day shoots.
- Pacing: Striking the ideal balance between 12fps tactile charm and smooth cinematic movement.
